You Need: A yoga mat
I’ve been craving a morning at home alone and a practice like this. Simple, sweet and nourishing. Some kind of rhythm has changed in my life and I’ve been negotiating with my non-negotiables. I call my “daily routine” a recipe. A list of things I like to do for me that makes me feel grounded, joyful and aligned. I find that with every season, the recipe changes. The environment changes so why shouldn’t my recipe? Things like sunlight, temperature, how often people are home, etc, changes throughout the year, so I have to change my recipe, too.
Lately, there’s been no recipe. In between the pause of it, becoming aware of how it’s affecting me, and beginning again, I feel like I’m holding my breath. But eventually I let it go and have to draw one in. My home practice in the winter looks different than my practice in spring and I have to honor that.
What would your recipe look like? What ingredients go into your day to make it taste sweet? It doesn’t have to be elaborate or hard to find. It could be things you already have available to you. Like sunshine on your skin. Or opening your window each morning to hear the birds.
The very first line of the Yoga Sutras translates as “And now the teaching on yoga begins.” And now…and now…and even now. There’s an endless beginning and you can begin anywhere. Exactly as you are. It doesn’t say “once you get this done, then we can begin” or “the teaching on yoga begins IF.” It’s unconditional, all-encompassing. It wraps you up and invites you into each moment. The yoga teaching can begin AND you can be really stressed out AND have the house a mess AND think you have no time AND begin while you’re in this hard conversation. You can be doing hard things AND begin to learn. Because yoga is about uniting the breath with every moment you’re in and you always have your breath.
I hope you make a morning out of this practice. With a warm drink, a blanket close by, and maybe your journal. Write three things you’re grateful for.
If you have a little more time and want to begin a deeper journaling practice, check out Sunday Prompts where I list unique, heart-felt, inspiring ways to connect to yourself with words.
